Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG)
Need Support Meeting Biodiversity Net Gain Requirements?
Tree Ecology Solutions Ltd provides clear, proportionate Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) advice to support planning applications and development projects across the UK.
We understand that BNG can feel complex and unfamiliar. Our role is to guide you through the process, from baseline assessment to planning submission and long-term compliance, using clear language and practical solutions.
Our focus is on helping you meet statutory requirements efficiently, while supporting positive outcomes for biodiversity and development alike.
What Is Biodiversity Net Gain?
Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is a planning requirement that ensures development results in a measurable improvement in biodiversity compared to the site’s pre-development condition.
In most cases, this means achieving a minimum 10% net gain in biodiversity value, calculated using the statutory biodiversity metric, and securing habitats for a minimum period of 30 years.
BNG is not solely about protecting what already exists — it also encourages habitat enhancement and creation to support nature’s recovery.
How Biodiversity Net Gain Works
1. Baseline Assessment
Before development, a baseline ecological assessment is undertaken to understand the site’s existing biodiversity value.
This may include:
Habitat surveys (e.g. UKHab classifications)
Identification of notable or protected species (where relevant)
Habitat condition assessment
Biodiversity Metric calculations
This establishes the starting point against which biodiversity gains are measured.
2. Design & BNG Strategy
Using the baseline data, a BNG strategy is developed to demonstrate how biodiversity gains will be achieved.
This may involve:
Applying the Biodiversity Metric to demonstrate net gain
Avoiding or minimising habitat loss through site design
On-site habitat creation and enhancement
Off-site habitat provision where on-site delivery is not feasible
Financial contributions where required by planning policy
Engagement with the Local Planning Authority
The aim is to integrate biodiversity considerations into the development early and proportionately.
3. Implementation
Once planning permission is granted, approved biodiversity measures are delivered alongside construction.
This may include:
Habitat creation or restoration
Species-specific enhancement measures
Soil and hydrology considerations
Timing works to align with appropriate seasons
Supporting contractors with ecological guidance
Implementation is undertaken in accordance with the approved plans and relevant legislation.
4. Monitoring & Long-Term Management
BNG requires habitats to be managed and monitored over the long term, typically for 30 years.
This may involve:
Periodic ecological monitoring
Adaptive management where required
Securing habitats through legal mechanisms (e.g. planning obligations or conservation covenants)
Reporting to the Local Planning Authority
This ensures biodiversity gains are maintained and continue to deliver ecological value.
